My name is Tracey Eaton. I am a journalist based in Florida. I have been going to Ecuador on and off since 1981, when I was a Fulbright scholar there.
During a trip to the South American nation in 2010, I visited a Huaorani community called Bameno. I met with Penti, the leader of the community. He told me he worried about the impact of oil drilling on the Huaorani and the jungle forest where they have lived for hundreds of years.
Penti’s commitment to his community and the environment impressed me. I returned to his country in 2014 and again in 2016 to carry out more interviews. Some Huaorani told me they had growing concerns about oil contamination. I hope to go back to Ecuador sometime soon to investigate that issue and other developments.
